Recycles tires. Yahoo says: "The tires it
collects are processed and sold as tire-derived fuel used in lieu of
coal by pulp and paper producers, cement kilns and electric utilities;
as a substitute for crushed stone in civil engineering applications; as
crumb rubber (rubber granules) used for playground and athletic
surfaces, running tracks, landscaping/groundcover applications and
bullet containment systems, or as heavy-duty roofing shingles used as a
replacement for wood shingles." Note that tires burned as fuel are

AA -- Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa)
Remembering this company's commercials on TV
from my childhood, I spent a long time digging through their website
trying to find any evidence of their recycling activities. I found next
to nothing. If these guys are really active in large-scale recycling,
they're certainly not telling anybody about it. (MBJ) Part II: My
friend Erin Rogers just sent me the following info: "There is an
organization called Neighbors
for Neighbors in Bastrop, Texas that is fighting lignite strip
mining and massive water pumping in Lee and Bastrop counties by Alcoa.
Alcoa uses the lignite to fuel a smelter in Milam county that is one of
the worst air polluters in Texas and is 'grandfathered' so that it does
not have to comply with Texas or national clean air laws." (9-99)
