APD - Air
Products & Chemicals Company
Air Products and Chemicals, based in
Allentown, PA, manufactures industrial gases
(58% of 1996 revenues) such as oxygen, nitrogen,
and argon; specialty chemicals (34%), including
polyvinyl alcohol, polyurethane additives, and
specialty additives; environmental equipment,
energy facilities, and air pollution control
systems (1%); and related equipment and services
(7%), including cryogenic and noncryogenic
equipment for air separation.Air Products has
developed a number of technologies that enable
adhesive end-users to meet the requirements of
the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 and other
regulations for waste water discharge. These
include low-VOC vinyl acetate-ethylene emulsion
technology, low residual vinyl acetate monomer
polyvinyl acetate homopolymer technology, and
two new redispersable powders for adhesives to
assist adhesive manufacturers in eliminating
waste water discharge. The company won Chemical
Engineering's Kirkpatrick Chemical Engineering
Achievement Award in 1995 for an oxygen-based
technology for recycling mixed office
wastepaper. The environmentally-friendly process
employs oxygen injection in a concurrent upflow
reactor to produce white pulp from the wastes
while stripping out the dyes present in them.
This oxidative-bleaching process can produce
high-quality paper stock from wastes that vary
greatly in composition, and it incurs
significantly lower treatment-chemical costs
than do alternative methods. The U.S. DOE is
supporting a joint venture between Chemicals
Inc. and Eastman Chemical Co. to demonstrate Air
Products' novel liquid-phase methanol technology
at Eastman's integrated coal-gasification
facility in Kingsport, TN. The technology is one

from coal and can economically satisfy the most
stringent environmental limits for sulfur
dioxide and nitrogen oxides.

Problems
with natural gas
(from Citizen's
Trust, which is now defunct)
Although natural gas is significantly cleaner
than other fossil fuels, it is not without serious
environmental consequences. Certain aspects of
natural gas production can be just as dangerous and
destructive as petroleum and coal. When evaluated
in the areas of Contribution to Global Warming and
Atmospheric Conditions, Impacts of Development and
Exploration, and Resource Availability, there are a
few areas of major concern relating to natural gas.
Off-shore drilling, for example, one of the primary
methods of extracting natural gas, has a per day
emissions equivalent to 7,000 cars driving 50 miles
each. Methane leaks associated with the transport
of natural gas contribute significantly to global
warming, and have 20 times the strength of carbon
dioxide emissions. It should also be noted that
natural gas is a finite resource, and many see the
promotion of natural gas as the ultimate solution
as an impediment to the implementation of renewable
energy sources.
Despite these drawbacks, natural gas does offer
a partial solution to the problems of traditional
fossil fuels, and the benefits are indisputable. It
has far lower carbon dioxide emissions than oil or
coal, and seems to be the cleanest interim choice
as we move from using predominantly finite
resources like petroleum and coal to renewable,
lower-impact resources like hydro and solar power.
Though far from the ultimate solution, the gaining
popularity of natural gas may be seen as the
beginning of a new era, wherein the environment is
not only a selling point, but a major priority.

[In 2-01, I noticed their symbol
was no longer listed, and not mentioned on their
website.] CalEnergy is involved in
geothermal, natural gas, and hydroelectric

not according to their web site, but they are
involved with oil & coal. (MBJ)
