Austin Thrift Shops

Biggest stores

Central Beds & Couches

Goodwill
5555 N. Lamar Blvd.
30% for 55+ Tues.
(512) 451-2306
Huge store, huge selection.  But dressing rooms are locked, sometimes a hassle to get one opened.  Using Google Maps' measuring tool, I estimate it's about 20,000 sf.

Texas Thrift
5319 N. IH-35 (512) 380-0025 PROS: Lots of stuff, esp. non-clothes, well-organized. CONS: Sketchy area, narrow aisles.

Habitat ReStore
13804 U.S. 183

20% off for 55+ on Tuesdays
(512) 367-5795 Used and surplus building materials (light fixtures, leftover paint, tile, flooring, doors, electrical, you name it).  There's also a bunch of new, cheap Chinese imports.
Furniture, probably the best store for non-bed furniture (desks shelves, chairs, couches).
Clothes and housewares.  The clothes section is a bit small, but there are still good finds, and ReStore prices much more aggressively than most other thrifts.  Housewares section is comparable to traditional thrifts in size.

Salvation Army* I-35 @ SH45
601 W. Louis Henna Blvd, Round Rock, TX
(512) 246-7292 Actually in Round Rock.  Advertised as 25,000 sq.ft, but it didn't seem nearly that large.  (I think they're including the donation area.)  Closed Sundays. rarely

(512) 442-7200

Two color tags each week, 50% and 75% off respectively, and prices are already low (e.g., shirts as low as $1.99 in 2024).  Sign up for the email list and sign up for the email list and get $5- and $10-off coupons to your mailbox, and never miss the 50%-off sale days.  14,726 sf.†  Benefits the Assoc. of Retarded Citizens.

Goodwill Outlet
6505 Burleson Rd
30% for 55+ Tues.
(512) 681-3301
This is an outlet store, so they sell everything in bulk ($1.39/lb.!), and nothing is organized, just dumped into huge bins.

*Salvation Army has been controversial, particularly in its efforts to oppose equal rights for gay people.  They're also closed Sundays, unlike pretty much all other thrift stores.
† Where store sizes are listed, that's from my own measurements.  I include dressing rooms but not donation/sorting areas.

50%-off sales

Most thrift stores offer 50% off on certain price tag colors.  (e.g., Thursday might be 50% off red tags).  Thrift Town goes one further with a weekly color that's 75% off.

Some stores run 50%-off sales on everything.  For example, this is what I've seen in the past (no guarantee they'll have it in the future):

Senior & Military discounts

The Burnet Road Strip

Mostly smaller stores.  Many carry vintage wooden furniture.

Other thrift shops, South

All other thrift shops

Vintage Shops (i.e., older styles, and usu. higher quality than thrift)

I'm no longer able to keep up with the dozens of vintage shops around Austin, but thankfully Vintage Around Town Guide is now taking care of that.

Women’s name-brand clothing

Other stores with used stuff

Update history

For the first ~15 years I've been publishing this page, I didn't track changes, but now I'm starting to.
