Guide
to Animal-Derived Ingredients
in food
and/or personal care products
(If you're looking for things like
non-leather shoes, then see our companion page about non-leather shoes and such.)
The absolute best source for this kind of info is the " Guide to
Food Ingredients " by the Vegetarian Resource Group. ($6)
But without buying the guide, answers to the
most frequently asked questions are available for free on their
website.
The next-best (and free) resource is PETA's guide to ingredients, though they keep
moving it around their website. [Update: Yep, they did it yet again, breaking my link, so I'm no longer going to find it again and link to it, since PETA will just break the link again.] However, I question its accuracy. For example, most
sources say that mono- & di-glycerides are most often plant-based
(from peanut, corn, or other veg. oil), although they can be
animal-based. And Orowheat says their mono- & di-glycerides definitely come
from vegetable oils, according to a letter they sent me, and a page on
their website (which is no longer on their site). However, PETA's guide
lists these ingredients flatly as "from animal fat". (How can you tell
whether a specific product's mono & diglycerides are plant- or
animal-based? Call the product's producer and ask them.) PETA's list
does have a bibliography with nine references for those wishing to see
the original sources.
And then there's my list, below, compiled in 1998. It
contains many more ingredients than most other lists, but no
definitions. Following the list are notes about my sources, and an explanation about the bold and purple items.
Please don't write to ask for more information about the
list or its contents -- it should be apparent that I've already
told you everything I know.

For this list, I started by copying a big list of
ingredient from the Animal Rights Resource Site . Their site said the
list was posted by Jonathan Esterhazy of the Manitoba Animal Rights
Coalition. His post says that he took the information from the 1992
version of the North
American Vegetarian Society's "Personal Care with Principle" book.
I have the 1998 version of the book (now titled "Personal Care for People Who Care ", and it credits
the list to the American
Vegan Society , which has zero information about animal ingredients
on their website at the time I'm writing this. The list in NAVS' 1998
book is much shorter (and curiously, most of the items in the shorter
1998 list do not appear at all in the larger 1992 list). The footnote
in the book says:
From the American Vegan
Society's "Listing of Ingredients and Materials: Animal, Vegetable, or
Mineral?" Reprinted with permission. For a complete listing which
includes definitions, contact the American Vegan Society at 56 Dinshah
Drive, P.O. Box H, Malaga, NJ 08328, Tel. (609) 694-2887. [As I
write this, AVS does not have a website.]
So the bulk of the list below is from AVS/NAVS/MARC/ARRS. I
also added items from the 1998 "Personal Care" guide which did not
appear in the original list, and show them in dark
purple . Items in the original 1992 "Personal Care" guide
which are also in the 1998 guide are shown in black boldface .
Please don't write to ask for more information about the
list or its contents -- it should be apparent that I've already
told you everything I know.
In March 2005 I got this email: "Your ingredient listing
of what is "Definitely from Animals" and "Probably from Animals" is
quite outdated. Just to name two ... Stearic acid and Sodium PCA are
now mostly derived from plants sources in the natural health and beauty
industry. -- Daniel Stewart, Web Manager, Kiss My Face Corp." Fair
enough, except:
Mr. Stewart did not reply to my request for a source for a
more current list.
The other more well-known sources, such as PETA's website,
also list Stearic acid as being definitely animal-derived.
While stearic acid in the natural health and beauty
industry might be plant derived, that doesn't mean that they're
plant-derived in the overwhelming majority of products on the market.
Please don't write to ask for more information about the
list or its contents -- it should be apparent that I've already told
you everything I know.
Why be vegetarian? Save animals, get healthy, lose weight, help the planet -- take your pick!
All about Protein . All vegetables have plenty of protein. Even lettuce. How do you think elephants get so big? :)
Vegetarian Myths. From "plants aren't a complete protein" to "Hitler was a vegetarian", we run down all the common misconceptions here.
Vegetarianism and the Environment. Meat production involves horrific amounts of water, land, energy, and pollution, compared to plant foods. Going veg. is the easiest way to lessen your impact.
