Goodwill |
5555 N. Lamar Blvd. (512) 451-2306 |
55+: 30% Tue. | Huge store, huge selection. But dressing rooms are
locked, sometimes a hassle to get one opened. Using Google
Maps' measuring tool, I estimate it's about 20,000 sf. 50%-off sales: In past years: (1) Early March • (2) Sun. before Thanksgiving • (3) Dec. 29-31 (until noon). They couldn't tell me 8/19/24 when I called to ask about current status. |

Habitat ReStore |
13804 U.S. 183 (512) 367-5795 |
55+: 20% Tue Military + 1st responders: 20% Wed |
• Used and surplus building materials (light
fixtures, leftover paint, tile, flooring, doors,
electrical, you name it). There's also a bunch of new,
cheap Chinese imports. • Furniture, probably the best store for non-bed furniture (desks shelves, chairs, couches). • Clothes and housewares. The clothes section is a bit small, but there are still good finds, and ReStore prices much more aggressively than most other thrifts. Housewares section is comparable to traditional thrifts in size. |

daily color tags 25%, 50%, and 75%. 50-off sales: (1) Labor Day • (2) Black Friday (day after Thanksgiving) There's an unmarked straight-up illegal casino a few doors down. |

Thrift Town |
5726
Menchaca Rd (512) 442-7200 |
50+: 20% Mon Military: 15% daily Color tags: 50% + 75% |
Hands down the cheapest thrift in town. Color tags 50% and 75% off. Shirts are as low as $1.99 (in 2024), and if it's 75%-off, then 50¢. Sign up for the email list and get $5- and $10-off coupons to your mailbox. 14,726 sf.† Benefits the Assoc. of Retarded Citizens. | ||||
Goodwill Outlet |
6505 Burleson Rd (512) 681-3301 |
This is an outlet store, so they sell everything in bulk
($1.59/lb.!), and nothing is organized, just dumped into huge
bins. |
† Where store sizes are listed, that's from my own measurements. I include dressing rooms but not donation/sorting areas.

Vintage Shops (i.e., older styles, and usu. higher quality than
thrift)
I'm no longer able to keep up with the dozens of vintage shops around Austin, but thankfully Vintage Around Town Guide is now taking care of that.
Women’s name-brand clothing
- Designer Exchange. Great selection of prom dresses and wedding gowns. Consignment store (minimum 8 items to open an account). (7739 Northcross Dr., 452-0606; M-F 11-6, Sat 10-6, Sun. closed)
- Still in Style. Women's consignment boutique; formerly Restyle. (7301 Burnet Rd., 407-8861)
- Style Encore. MN-based resale shop buying and selling gently-used women's business and casual clothing.
- Thrift stores in the richer neighborhoods. The thrifts in the tonier parts of town (e.g. west of Mopac) are said to have more brand-name clothing, such as the Goodwill at 701 Newman Dr.
Other stores with used stuff
- Austin Creative Reuse. A thrift store specifically for art supplies. They also take donations of hard-to-recycle items like bicycle tire tubes and CDs/DVDs. Here's a list of what they take (and sell).
- Goodwill Computer Works. Used computers & electronics. 8965 Research Blvd., 637-7501
- City-Wide Vintage Sale. Monthly, at Palmer Events Center, $10 admission. 900 Barton Springs Road.
- Settlement Home Sale. Annual sale at the Palmer Events Center, first weekend in Nov. 70,000 square feet, meaning 3.5x the size of the largest thrift store. On the last day most items are discounted to 50% or 75% off, then for the last two hours, you buy a huge box for $10 and can take anything you can fit in the box.
- FreeStore. A "store" where the used clothing and household goods are free to the poor. (Nothing is actually sold here, even to those who can afford it.) Run by the United Methodist Church. (1717 E. 12th, 469-7970)
- EstateSales.net. Find estate sales near you. There are some in Austin every week.
