The Military Budget as Cookies

This excellent animation from TrueMajority shows in graphic detail (using Oreo cookies) how ridiculously, large the military budget is, and how we could solve many domestic problems with a modest 12% cut. A must-see. (watch it now)

Solar Energy Companies

Solar is fraction of its business: GAIA, KYO, SI

Mostly Solar

APWR.pk - AstroPower

AstroPower develops, manufactures, markets and sells a range of five classes of solar products: solar cells, modules, panels, systems and solar electricity. (Yahoo 1-01)

DSTI - DayStar Technologies

The Company is developing a high-volume manufacturing process that could significantly reduce the cost of solar cell production, and therefore reduce the cost of solar electricity. Prototypes of the Company's CIGS cells produced in batches in the laboratory are being tested by the United States Air Force Research Laboratory and Dutch Space B.V. for satellite power applications. (Yahoo, 3-'05) [Ed. note: It looks like this product/process will largely be used for military applications.]

ENER - Energy Conversion Devices

ECD makes solar panels, batteries for electric vehicles, and data storage products for computers. I have one of their solar panels and it works great. They're also involved with fuel cells. Texaco, the third-largest U.S. oil company, bought a 20% stake in ENER in June 2000. (MBJ)

ESLR - Evergreen Solar

Evergreen Solar, Inc. (ESLR) develops, manufactures, and markets solar power products that provide environmentally clean electric power throughout the world. ESLR believes that its proprietary and patented solar power technologies, including its String Ribbon technology, will offer significant design, cost and manufacturing advantages over competing solar power technologies. (Yahoo, 1-01)

FSLR - First Solar

Makes thin-film solar panels. (MBJ, 2-08)

LVCP.pk - Legend Investment Corp.

A holding company investing in solar and wind energy. Bought a 51% interest in GiraSolar BV in Feb. 2006, which had $12M in revenues in fiscal 2004/05. (MBJ, 2-06)

SPIR - Spire Corporation

Spire is the world's leading supplier of the tools to manufacture photovoltaic modules (solar panels). In 10/00, they spun off their biomedical business into a wholly-owned subsidiary, Spire Biomedical (which is they say is "a leader in providing surface engineering treatments to orthopedic and other implantable medical devices to improve their performance in the body"). (MBJ, 10-00)

SPWR - SunPower

SunPower Corporation designs, manufactures and sells high efficiency solar cells and solar panels that generate electricity from sunlight for residential, commercial and remote power applications. They claim their proprietary all-back-contact silicon solar cell technology produces up to 50% more power per square foot compared to conventional solar cells. (From their website, 3-06)

XSNX - XsunX

XsunX has developed a technology that allows glass windows to produce electricity from the sun. As I write this the product is still in the development stage and is not for sale. (MBJ, June 2005)

(Yahoo 2-01) Acquired Real Goods, a mail-order retailer of solar, alternative energy, and environmentally-friendly products, in 2-01.(MBJ 2-01)

KYO - Kyocera

Japan's Kyocera Solar, a subsidiary of Tokyo-based megamanufacturer Kyocera, is exploiting the niche of uninterrupted power for such applications as remotely-located telecommunications, traffic signals, pipeline monitoring, water pumping and off-grid residential electricity. (Forbes.com, 5-01) Photocomm became Golden Genesis, and then Golden Genesis was bought by Kyocera International, to become its subsidiary, Kyocera Solar. (MBJ 1-01) Kyocera Corporation designs and produces fine ceramic parts, ceramic IC packages and electronic components, as well as optical instruments. The Company produces ceramic cutting tools, ceramics for medical applications, recrystallized jewelry and solar energy products. Electronic equipment has become one of the Company's major products through its subsidiary Cybernet Electronics Corporation.
