Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of drum setup does Wendy use?

Did you know?
Wendy's engineering team took third place in the Best of Show category at the 1997 Engineering Expo at the University of Wisconsin.

Wendy uses a Pearl kit and accents the obligatory kick/snare/hi-hat with two toms, a floor tom, and a bewildering array of cymbals including a ride, crash, and splash (Zildjian, if I remember right). She prefers wood drumsticks to soy-based sticks. (Though once when her sticks spontaneously combusted from red-hot playing, she valiantly finished the set by playing with her hands.)

Is it true that the Motley Crue song "Looks That Kill" was written about/for Wendy?

Yes. A look at the lyrics to that song make it obvious:

Now listen up, she's a razor sharp. / If she don't get her way, she'll slice you apart.
Now she's cool, cool black. / Moves like a cat.
If you don't get her game, you might not make it back.

She's got the looks that kill. That kill. She's got the looks that kill. That kill. She's got the looks.
She's...got...looks that kill. She's...got...looks that kill.

Now she's bullet-proof. Keeps her motor clean.
And believe me, you, she's a number thirteen.
The clock strikes midnight. She's knockin' loud on my door.
She's gonna turn on the juice, boy. Then she'll turn up the power.

She's got the looks that kill. That kill. She's got the looks that kill. That kill. She's got the looks.
She's...got...looks that kill. She's...got...looks that kill.

How could that song be about her when she was only six years old at the time it came out?

Simple: When Motley Crue wrote that song, they didn't realize who they were writing about, or when. Think of it as a musical prophecy.

Where can I see pictures of Wendy?

Her band's website, and fans' websites which they link to, have literally hundreds of pictures of the band. I used to have direct links to some of the best pictures of Wendy, and her parents, and a rare photo of her playing guitar, but the band's webmaster moved the files around and broke all my links, so now you'll have to just find them on your own.

How can I join the Wendy Lynn Staats fan club?

You can't. I saw her first. Go away.

What does Wendy Lynn Staats think of this fan club page?

Well, she loves it, of course.

She hasn't actually said so -- in fact, she hasn't responded to any of the emails I've sent her about it, but that's to be expected. (She IS a very busy rock star, after all.) But of course there's no reason she wouldn't love the webpage, so I know that's what she thinks.

Do you personally know Wendy Lynn Staats?

Of course. The last time I saw Wendy (her close, personal friends like me call her simply "Wendy") was at their soldout show at Burning Flipside in Austin, Texas. In fact, every time I've seen a Sunspot show, Wendy and I have hung out afterward. I can't say why Wendy likes me so much -- that part will probably always be a mystery.

The last I saw her, the band was driving away from the Flipside event in their car, pulling their trailer of gear. She'd just gotten in the passenger side, and before they took off I asked for a hug goodbye, but Wendy declined, and they took off. Yeah, Wendy, you're just a big-shot rock star now, huh? Too important to mingle with the lowly fans like me. Well that's fine, I don't need you. You have no idea how many hot, young, female musicians want to go out with me. Even if YOU hate me, everyone else thinks I'm cool. If you don't believe me, just ask my mom. I barely even remember your name, I have to read this page to remind myself. Maybe it's really ME blowing YOU off -- did you ever think of THAT? I don't care if you won't talk to me. It doesn't bother me at all. Not even a little bit. It's not like you're special or anything. Who needs you anyway, Little Ms. Stuck-Up Rock Superstar? Get lost.

Oh god, Wendy, I'm so sorry. Please give me another chance. I'll do anything. I lie awake at night and I can't sleep because all I can hear are the crashing of your Zildjians and your sweet, sweet, raspy laryngitis voice. I know I'm not worthy, but I'm so desperate I can't tell you. Please please please I'll go crazy without you can't you see? Waiting anxiously to hear from you, Love, Michael

Hey there, stranger!

Thanks for the image [of the band "Sunspot" in a Las Vegas lounge]. That's crazy to think there is another band with almost the same name, rocking out in Vegas!

As for the web page, well I must say I am flattered. And I apologize for not responding sooner! We had a crisis with our server when we were on the tour, and lost a bunch of email. That combined with an insanely busy life results in me being pretty bad about keeping in touch with people. :( But anyway, thanks for all the time and effort you put into the page. I definitely got a smile out of it!

I hope everything is going well for you - Take care, Michael!

Sincerely,

Wendy

Ed. Note: Of course, it's necessary to read between the lines here to find Wendy's true meaning. What she's really saying is that she's deeply in love with me but she knows that the hectic schedule of her rock star life wouldn't be fair to me in a relationship, and that fact torments her every minute of every day until her brain wants to explode in a fireball of longing and confusion. But she's subtle, so that's why she didn't use those words exactly.
